After both lanes on River Road in Muhlenburg Township have been completed, the Cold In-Place Asphalt Recycling produced a new crown and a new cross slope helping to control storm water flow along the two miles of road adjacent to the Schuylkill River.
River Road in Muhlenburg Township was inundated with cracking and potholes. The CIR base cut the total depth of the old, deteriorated asphalt pavement.
River Road in Muhlenburg Township had no cross slope, and most of the roadway was flat. The center joint had cracked and had been patched with hot mix asphalt on many occasions. In some areas, new potholes are evident.
River Road was inundated with potholes, alligator or corrugated cracks, and patches on top of patched material trying to hold the roadway together.

Traffic can easily pass by the train.

This asphalt roadway is corrugated throughout. there is no center crown to force storm water to the concrete gutter pans so, water stays on the surface and drains through the crack pattern and into the base material. You cannot mill & fill these types of roadway, the crack is completely through the asphalt thickness.
This pavement is dry and oxidized. The roadway is flat with no crown, allowing storm water to congregate on the surface of the roadway. The grass shoulders are higher than the roadway so storm water cannot drain away from the asphalt roadway.
Pavement has many issues, cracking, both longitudinal and transverse. Patched areas have been repaired on several occasions, roadway is dry and oxidized and has lost its life as a serviceable roadway.
This residential street has seen many trench restorations and new asphalt overlays. the curb reveal is almost non existing allowing storm water to run into the roadway or over the curbs. The roadway again has many unattended cracks and depressions can be seen in the upper portion of the roadway.
This roadway has been overlaid several times. There are numerous patches and still cracked areas of no repair. The longitudinal center joint has cracked open and has been repaired on many occasions.
When a roadway has received this amount of crack sealing it is time to look for the real problem of why the roadway is braking down.
The only stable asphalt is the material in the reconstructed trench and that shows signs of fractures. Storm water again congregates on the surface of the roadway creating corrugation and water filled potholes.
Storm water ponds on the surface of the roadway and essentially rots the asphalt and weakens the structure.
Asphalt is bleeding from a chip-seal that has lost most of its aggregate, leaving only the oil on the surface.
